How CBD Products have Benefited Breast Cancer Patients

October is breast cancer prevention month, and some patients have expressed how CBD has been essential along with their treatments and recovery path. Here's what they have to say:

According to breastcancer.org, breast cancer is "an uncontrolled growth of breast cells" that results in a lump in this specific area. Like any other type of cancer, it develops when our body's control mechanism stops working due to mutations in the genes responsible for regulating cell growth.

If you are a person who has undergone this condition or know someone who has, you are aware of the levels of discomforts patients experience while being treated for it. Some of the side effects of breast cancer treatments are pain, inflammation, nausea, vomiting, stress, anxiety, among other specific ones.

You've probably heard how people who are enduring or have gone through cancer have used CBD products to ease discomforts caused by harsh medications, procedures, and treatments such as mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. So, what is CBD? Does it work? How has it helped soothe breast cancer's side effects?

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 60 natural compounds found in cannabis that does not cause psychoactive effects, unlike other compounds derived from hemp plants. Studies on CBD have shown potential health benefits that may strengthen physical and psychological health, as it is generally not harmful nor intoxicating for humans.

These benefits are possible given that our human bodies have something called an endocannabinoid system. Our endocannabinoid system responds to the cannabidiol receptors in CBD, working as neurotransmitters that release a cascade of potential health benefits into our systems when bound.

So how does CBD help soothe breast cancer's side effects?

CBD binds to the endocannabinoid system's receptors to release its benefits. Some of these benefits may include anti-inflammatory agents that could aid with discomforts, as well as pain. Some other benefits could help release stress and anxiety levels, as well as potentially regulating sleep patterns.

Andrea Mathias Schmucki, MD and breast cancer patient herself, stated that she looked at CBD as "a complementary, using it in addition to, rather than as an alternative to, traditional treatment." She mentions starting to use CBD when she realized that ibuprofen was not helping much with the itchiness, swelling, and pain caused by all of the procedures she had undergone.

Dr. Mathias experienced high levels of discomfort. She "was open to anything" and started her CBD journey using CBD oil drops every day. While consuming her drops every day, she noticed how her chest discomforts began to feel less painful. She eventually confirmed how the pain returned after she ran out of the CBD drops and didn't consume them until later.

CBD can be found in various products as it continues to be one of the most prevailing components to infuse other products with, given its promising properties.
