Your Guide to the Endocannabinoid System: What is it? How Does it Work?

Most people are unfamiliar with the Endocannabinoid System and what it does for our bodies. What is it? And how does it work?

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a complex system of cellular receptors and chemical signals found in the brain, organs, connective tissue, glands, and immune cells. It is in charge of regulating several bodily functions such as sleep, appetite, mood, and memory through the interaction between some key components: endocannabinoids, cannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes.

The history and science behind the ECS:

The ECS was found while studying THC's path through the human body and its interaction, which led scientists to discover a whole system stemming from our central nervous system and distributed through our entire bodies. Scientists began and continue to study the other types of cannabinoids found in hemp plants and their interactions with the ECS.

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found in cannabis that interact with our endocannabinoid receptors. Studies suggest these receptors (CB1 and CB2) act as barriers to regulating the influx of information from the compounds, activating our whole ECS when stimulated by endocannabinoids.

Endocannabinoids are similar molecules to cannabinoids, but these are produced by our bodies and are found in all tissues, organs, and even bodily fluids. Experts have only been able to identify two types of endocannabinoids: anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG), and they are in charge of keeping functions running normally.

Cannabidiol and the ECS

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 60 compounds in the Cannabis Sativa plant that interacts with the ECS to release great benefits. Some of the CBD effects include potentially reducing stress & anxiety, regulating sleep patterns, and naturally enhancing focus, all tied to the ECS's functions. Studies show that CBD effects are encouraging, but much more research has to be done and is currently being conducted for both CBD and the ECS.

Multiple industries have understood the potential CBD effects have in unison to the ECS's to maintain important body functions such as homeostasis, which researchers agree is the ECS's primary function according to their findings.
